CHARLIE WILSON is co-leader of Sidley’s M&A and private equity group in Asia. He has advised on investments in Southeast Asia for more than 20 years and has extensive experience in advising private equity funds and corporates on their investments and disposals across the region. Previously, Charlie was a partner in the Singapore office of a global law firm where he served as the head of its Indonesian practice. Charlie is recognized as “M&A Lawyer of the Year” at the Asian Lawyer Emerging Markets Awards (2016), a leading Corporate M&A lawyer in the Indonesia and Singapore chapters in Chambers Asia Pacific (2014 – 2019), Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2015 – 2018) and IFLR1000 (2015 – 2019). He was named a “Best Lawyer” in the Singapore chapter of The Best Lawyer (2019).

In the 2019 edition of Chambers Asia Pacific, Charlie is recognized as an experienced practitioner who is sought out for “his knowledge of Indonesia,” and is noted by a client as “someone I trust to help us accomplish our goals.” He represents private equity funds and corporates across a range of sectors and often on particularly large and complex transactions.



Examples of Charlie’s experience include advising on the following matters as international counsel*:

  • PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk, a leading Indonesian power company listed on the IDX, on the takeover offer by a wholly owned subsidiary for Ophir Energy Plc.
  • Indika Energy on its A$7.68 million investment in Nusantara Resources Limited, an Australian Stock Exchange listed company.
  • edotco Group, a Malaysia-based telecommunications infrastructure services company, on its sale of 30% stake in edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd. to GETCO Group, a Bangladesh-based conglomerate. 
  • BlackRock on its sale of Asia Square Tower 2 to CapitaLand Commercial Trust for an agreed property value of S$2.09 billion. 
  • United Energy Group (UEG), a leading independent exploration and production company listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, in its acquisition of Pakistan oil and gas assets from OMV Aktiengesellschaft, an international, integrated oil and gas company based in Vienna, Austria, by acquiring the entire issued share capital of two wholly owned subsidiaries of OMV Aktiengesellschaft for an approximate consideration of €80.6 million and €77.2 million, respectively.
  • BlackRock on its sale of Asia Square Tower 1 to Qatar Investment Authority. This is the largest single-tower real estate transaction in the Asia Pacific to date and the second largest single-tower real estate transaction globally. This transaction was recognized as “Deal of the Year (Asia), 2016” by Private Equity Real Estate magazine.
  • PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk on its acquisition of a controlling stake in PT Amman Mineral Internasional (AMI), which is acquiring 82.2 percent of PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) for US$2.6 billion. The transaction is one of the largest in the natural resources sector in Asia.
  • Boon Rawd Brewery on its US$1.1 billion acquisition of a 25 percent interest in Vietnamese food company Masan Consumer Holdings and an acquisition of a 33 percent interest in Vietnamese brewery Masan Brewery. This is one of the biggest foreign investments into Vietnam outside of the energy sector.
  • Cargill in its Philippines joint venture with Jollibee Foods Corporation, the largest Asian food service company.
  • BlackRock on its disposal of 63-story tower block Vista Tower to Kenedix Asia Pte. Ltd. Vista Tower is part of an integrated development including office tower, hotel and retail podium known as The Intermark in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 
  • BlackRock on the S$468 million sale of The Westin Singapore, Marina Bay, a five-star hotel in central Singapore.
  • PT Pertamina (Persero), the national oil company of Indonesia, in its proposed US$725 million acquisition of the Venezuelan oil assets of Harvest Natural Resources Inc., a New York Stock Exchange-listed company.
  • Integrated Healthcare Holdings Sdn Bhd (a joint venture between Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Mitsui & Co., Ltd) and its affiliates with respect to the acquisition of 75 percent of Acibadem Group, the largest hospital chain in Turkey, in a cash and stock deal valued at over US$1.5 billion.
  • PT Indosat Tbk in the procurement of a satellite from Orbital Sciences Corporation and the related shareholder arrangements with an international satellite operator.
  • Haier Group on the acquisition of Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd’s consumer and commercial use washing machine businesses, its consumer use refrigerator business, and its white goods sales divisions in Japan and Southeast Asia. This matter was named “Deal of the Year 2011” by China Business Law Journal and won an Honorable mention in Asian-Mena Counsel (2012).
  • A sovereign wealth fund in relation to its investment in the Indonesian mining sector.
