Destinations to enjoy a hotel stay

Whether travelling for business or pleasure in far flung places around the world or just down the road, there are costs for certain items and services that many travellers will face when staying in a hotel. With this in mind, TripAdvisor presents the top five most affordable and top five most expensive cities in key destinations worldwide, based on the combined cost of popular items and services that are commonly incurred when staying in a hotel.

“These destinations are some of the most popular in the world, offering nightlife, gastronomy and great attractions,” commented Emma Shaw, TripAdvisor spokesperson. “But how do the cost of items and services in a hotel add up for each? We’ve worked out which destinations your money will go further in when enjoying a hotel stay.”

Most affordable:

1.    Cape Town, South Africa – The second-most populated city in South Africa, Cape Town is famous for its harbour and well-known landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Visitors can also enjoy the popular beaches and the striking Cape Dutch style architecture.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “What a fantastic place! I love all of South Africa, but Cape Town truly is something special.”


2.    Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt – Meaning “Bay of the Sheikh” in Arabic, Sharm el Sheikh is popular for its long stretch of beaches, nightlife and water sports, including scuba diving, windsurfing, snorkelling and canoeing.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “Sharm is wonderful. You won't find better snorkelling outside the Great Barrier Reef and as for sunbathing; you can do it all year round.”


3.    Mumbai, India – An architectural blend, Mumbai features buildings in the style of Gothic Revival, Indo-Saracenic and Art Deco. Offering a wide variety of traditional festivals, theatres and cuisine, visitors will be spoilt for choice.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “Mumbai is our favourite place to visit in India. We loved walking through the Bazaar with its sights, smells and tastes, and viewing the temples and Mosques.”


4.    Istanbul, Turkey – The largest city in Turkey, Istanbul is primarily known for its Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. Featuring a plethora of historic and modern shopping centres, including the Grand Bazaar – one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets, visitors can purchase items from jewellery to spices.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “This is the most beautiful place I've been to. I love the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and the atmosphere.”


5.    Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Located on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, where Jalisco and Nayarit meet. Puerto Vallarta boasts natural attractions including the Sierra Madre Mountains and a seemingly endless number of beaches, featuring gold sand, palm trees and crystal blue sea.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “We really enjoyed Puerto Vallarta and fell in love with this magical city. We are already making plans for a return visit.”

 

Most expensive:

1.    Moscow, Russia – An ancient city steeped in history, Moscow features famous sites such as the Kremlin, the Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral. With the vast quantity of must visit museums and galleries, visitors can further immerse themselves in Russian culture.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “Moscow is a beautiful city with so much history. It was an absolutely amazing experience.”


2.    Paris, France – A vibrant city of history, gastronomy, art and fashion, Paris is awash with esteemed attractions including the Arc de Triomphe, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower – visitors can take their pick of sights.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “Paris is magic, especially the Eiffel Tower at sundown – very impressive.”


3.    Stockholm, Sweden – Home to around 100 museums including the National museum, which houses Sweden’s largest collection of art comprised of 16,000 paintings, Stockholm is a cultural hub.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “Stockholm is a stunningly beautiful city.”


4.    Oslo, Norway – Boasting a large number of parks, festivals, theatres and museums including the Munch Museum which houses the Edvard Munch masterpiece, “The Scream”, visitors have a multitude of sights to explore.

5.    Zurich, Switzerland – The largest city in Switzerland, Zurich is home to numerous attractions and sights including the Lindenhof in the old town, which is the historical site of the Roman castle and the Roman Imperial Palace.

As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “Zurich is a nice city to visit with good shops and restaurants, but it is the mountains and fantastic scenery that make it unique.”
